APA Policy Breakfast Invitation - Join us August 2!
"Strong Cities, Strong Communities
August 2, 2012
8:00am – 9:00am (networking breakfast beginning at 7:30am)
American Planning Association
1030 15th St., NW, Suite 750 West
Washington, DC 20005
Featured Speaker
Mark Linton, Executive Director of the White House Council on Strong Cities, Strong Communities
Please join the American Planning Association for a policy breakfast discussion on the Obama’s Administration’s creative interagency partnership, the Strong Cities, Strong Communities (SC2) Initiative. Created last summer, the program aims to help economically struggling cities leverage resources to create lasting economic development and prosperity. This initiative brings together key federal agencies, including HUD and the Economic Development Administration, and is touted by the Obama Administration as a significant policy innovation to address challenges facing the nation’s urban communities.
The original pilot program focused on six cities that have experienced significant economic challenges, providing the cities with federal officials and other experts to offer their insight and help build capacity to focus on creative solutions. Recently, the Administration announced the availability of $11 million to expand the program beyond the original six cities and to create a new competitive grant program that allows cities to offer cash prizes for innovative economic development ideas. Mark Linton, the Executive Director of the White House Council on SC2, will discuss how this innovative program is helping cities leverage resources and find unique solutions in difficult economic climates and what resources SC2 plans to provide to cities in the future.
Join APA for an examination of this new federal initiative and a discussion of how federal policy can support economic development in urban communities. APA hosts quarterly policy breakfasts featuring leading experts, policymakers and thought leaders talking about the key issues affecting planning and community development. Light breakfast and coffee will be provided.
Space is limited. Please RSVP to govtaffairs@planning.org if you plan to attend."

Matthew Yglesias
Slate's business and economics correspondent, writer of the Moneybox blog & author of the newly published The Rent is Too Damn High
Please join the American Planning Association for a policy breakfast discussion on the impact of the rise of rental and multifamily housing on housing and community policy and economics. Homeownership and mortgage policies were at the center of the housing crisis that plunged the nation into the deepest recession since the Great Depression. Increasingly, it appears that recovery in the housing market will be driven by renters and multifamily housing.
Both demographic and real estate trends point to the vital role of rental housing in building strong communities and the overall economy.
· Nationwide apartment vacancy rates are at a decade low while average rents continue to rise to the highest level in more than four years.
· Housing construction has been led by multifamily housing starts with single family construction continuing to decline. In February, multifamily starts grew 21.1% while single family starts declined nearly 10%. Multifamily housing construction is up 85.4% from a year ago and has fully recovered to pre-recession levels.
· Morgan Stanley estimates that converting foreclosed properties to rental properties would generate 1.8 million jobs.
· Three large population segments likely to dominate the housing market: Gen Y, retiring baby boomers, and homeowners displaced during the recession show strong preferences for multifamily and rental housing.
What are the implications of this shift for policymakers and planners? How should housing policy — from Washington to local zoning boards — change in response to the demand for rental and multifamily housing? How should housing and neighborhood policy respond to the challenge of foreclosed properties? How should housing finance policy and institutions change?
Join APA for an examination of these trends, policy options and the implications for the nation's communities. APA hosts quarterly policy breakfasts featuring leading experts, policymakers and thought leaders talking about the key issues affecting planning and community development.
Space is limited. Please RSVP to govtaffairs@planning.org if you plan to attend.

Tuesdays at APA-DC
April 10 @ 5:30pm
The Sociable City: Planning, Smart Growth, and the Nighttime Economy
Speaker: Jim Peters
President, Responsible Hospitality Institute
Planning for people in a dense, highly concentrated space requires adapting Smart Growth policy to the nighttime economy and increased demand for places to socialize. More extensive consideration of zoning, transportation, and public resource allocation is necessary to attract the people who want to work, study, and play where they live.
Jim Peters, president of the Responsible Hospitality Institute, will share lessons learned from providing consultation services to more than four dozen U.S. and Canadian cities to better plan, manage, and police hospitality zones transitioning from day to evening to late-night activity. An author and a speaker at conferences worldwide, Peters blends his understanding of generational needs to meet and socialize with practical application of core principles gathered from research and documentation of success.

Jan 20 APA Communications Bootcamp Webinar on Social Media
"Resolve to Become a Better Advocate for Planning In 2012
APA can help you do it with Communications Boot Camp, which continues this month with a guide to working with elected officials and a webinar on social media.
Do your community's elected officials understand the value of planning? Do they stand up — and speak out — to support your work? If they're less-than-powerful advocates, turn to our how-to guide, "Working with Elected Officials," to learn how to identify potential allies and turn them into effective planning champions. This essential guide, prepared by APA Government Affairs Director Jason Jordan, will be available on the boot camp webpage on January 13.
You may register now for the last webinar in the boot camp series, "Social Media Strategies: Using, Organizing, Monitoring and Responding," on January 20. Panelists will review social media and give real-world examples of planners — and planning opponents — who are using them to great effect. Find out how you can implement these potent tools in your own work.
Register for the January 20 webinar
Previous how-to guides and recorded webinars are archived on the Communications Boot Camp webpage. All boot camp resources are free for APA members. Communications Boot Camp does not offer CM credit.

Additional Free Webinar on Chesapeake Bay Restoration Program
On Wednesday, November 2, 2011 from 1:00 - 2:30 PM EDT, the APA Regional and Intergovernmental Planning Division, with support from the APA Latinos and Planning Division, will sponsor a second webinar on the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Program. The Division’s first webinar on this subject was held in late May, and focused on US EPA and State of Maryland activities related to Chesapeake Bay water quality. The upcoming webinar will concentrate on State of Virginia activities.
The first hour of the program will feature presentations by the following panelists: (1) John Carlock, AICP, Deputy Executive Director for the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission (the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News area); (2) Jeffrey Corbin, Senior Advisor to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson for the Chesapeake Bay and Anacostia River; and (3), Anthony Moore, Assistant Secretary of the Virginia Department of Natural Resources for Chesapeake Bay Restoration. The last half hour of the webinar will be open to questions from the listening audience around the country. One and one half AICP Certification Maintenance credits are available.
The Chesapeake Bay Restoration program has been underway since the mid-1980’s. A recent consent order directed the EPA to take a stronger role. Initially, the states submitted their general strategies in the latter part of 2010 and early 2011 to implement the EPA directed program. Now the states are working with local and regional agencies in developing implementation steps.

“A Regional Approach to Minority-Owned Businesses in Chesapeake”
Speaker Steven Wright
Director of Economic Development, City of Chesapeake
Speaker Angela Barber

6161 Kempsville Circle, Norfolk, VA 23502
8:00 AM registration
8:30 to 10:30 AM event
Continental Breakfast provided
Abstract:
This event is the latest in the Ethnic and Cultural Diversity Committee’s (ECDC) Diversity Planners Network Breakfast Series. A SWaM (Small, Women and Minority Owned) firm is required on certain local and state-issued contracts in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Like any small business, a SWaM business must be competitive and aggressive, but such a business within the City of Chesapeake will not succeed if the client base is only within the City of Chesapeake. This rings true for SWaMs in every locality in Hampton Roads. Therefore a regional approach is required for all SWaMs in the area for competitiveness and survival. Steven Wright and Angela Barber will delve into the challenges of SWaM firms in Chesapeake and what their Department is doing to make these firms competitive within Hampton Roads. This Breakfast will serve as a predecessor to a regional ECDC symposium of Minority Business Development in Hampton Roads.

Inaugural Event
Sustaining Places
Tuesday, February 8, 2011 • 5:00 p.m.
Join us for the inaugural Tuesdays at APA–DC at APA's Washington, D.C., office.
The featured speaker is APA President Bruce Knight, FAICP, who will discuss APA's Sustaining Places Initiative and its efforts to reexamine the comprehensive plan with a focus on sustainability.
As Knight said in his remarks during the United Nations Fifth World Urban Forum last March in Rio de Janeiro, "Sustaining Places will examine both how places can be sustained and how places themselves sustain life and civilizations. Planning's comprehensive focus is not limited to a building or a site but encompasses all scales and all forms of organization of human settlements, from rural areas and small town to cities and metropolitan regions. ... Planners are uniquely qualified to be global leaders in integrating these two concepts of sustainability and places. Ours is the place-making profession and the places that we make must have lasting value for all."
