CNU DC Scholarship Opportunity for CNU 19 Madison

The Congress for the New Urbanism DC Chapter (CNU DC) is pleased to announce it will award two scholarships to attend the annual CNU Congress. The Congress will take place June 1-4, 2011 in Madison, Wisconsin.

CNU DC provides the scholarships to local students and recent graduates. Each scholarship will award the sum of $545.00 (which is equal to the cost of Congress registration for nonmember recent graduates).

Eligibility

Those eligible for scholarship application will be graduate-level students of architecture, planning, transportation, health, public policy/government, real estate and finance, law, or business/ economics; or recent graduates (within the last five years) from those same fields who are now working in DC, Maryland, or Virginia.

Essay

Interested candidates will submit an 1-2 page essay (500-1,000 words) on a topic determined by the CNU DC board of directors and the scholarship committee. For 2011, the topic is the following: New urbanism can provide a wide variety of benefits; some examples include more walking, less pollution, and community revitalization. When several factors like these work in combination, they create synergies. In other words, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. From your own research and experience, what new urbanism synergies are most important for our region (DC, Maryland, Virginia) and why? Propose one change that would help bring about those synergies.

Eligible candidates must submit their essay to CNU DC no later than 9:00 p.m., Friday, April 15, 2011. Submittals, questions, and comments should be sent via email to the CNU DC secretary, Laurence Aurbach. Winning candidates will be notified by Friday, April 22, 2011.

Additional details

Prior to the Madison Congress, scholarship recipients must provide their contact information (email address, phone number, and local mailing or business address). Student candidates must provide documentation of current enrollment. Recent graduates must provide documentation of enrollment within the past five years.

The recipient will be required to attend the CNU DC chapter meeting during the Congress, and briefly meet with the CNU DC board of directors.

CNU DC will pay the cost of Congress registration directly to the Congress for the New Urbanism on behalf of each scholarship recipient. If the cost of registration is less than the scholarship, the remaining amount will be paid to the recipient following the Congress. Previous scholarship winners are ineligible to receive a second scholarship.

Thanks for taking the time to read this reminder of the L.Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Fifth Annual Student Research Conference on Friday, April 15, 2011 on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University. Attached is the call for papers, which we may have already sent. The deadline for submitting abstracts is currently March 25, 2011.

We have some exciting news about this year's conference that might be of interest to your students who may want to engage their research on a more global level. This year we will have student panelists from VCU's 8 partner universities, including students from China, Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Russia, Spain, and Turkey. We are expecting at least 15 students to join the conference and with the inclusion of more than twelve schools from across the region last year, our conference looks to be a truly global affair.

Please encourage your undergraduate students to consider sending an abstract for what promises to be a very exciting research opportunity. We can accommodate approximately 24 panels so space may be limited, but we hope to include all worthy submissions that meet the broad test of "Government, Public, and International Policy and Affairs."

Student Scholarship Writing Competition

TWO $500 STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

The APA Divisions Council and the Environment and Natural Resources Division of APA are offering two $500 scholarships for student research papers. To participate in the writing contest prepare a paper of 2,300 - 2,500 words on some aspect of Food Systems Planning. This must be an individual paper, group papers will not be accepted.

Send papers to: Terry Holzheimer, FAICP at tholzheimer@arlingtonva.us by COB February 11, 2011. Papers should be in a Word or PDF format.

Awards for the for best student papers on Food Systems Planning will be announced on or about March 1st so students will have an opportunity to arrange to attend the APA Annual Conference and a special dinner on April 10, 2011. The Divisions Council will publish the winning papers on the APA website under Divisions Initiatives.

Call for Articles and Comments on New Urbanism

This is a special call for short articles and potentially commentaries about new urbanism for the June issue (Vol. 9, No. 2) of Practicing Planner. If you have an interest in submitting a short article or commentary on the topic of new urbanism (or possibly comments on other articles to be published), please contact me. The time frame for this, if you are interested, is between February 1 and about the end of April 2011. If interested or you have questions, please contact me at jweitz@bellsouth.net. Given the special nature of this request, we will not be able to offer an honorarium for these special articles and comments. The Role and Possibilities of Foresighted Planning in Transformation Processes

Change, diversification and transformation are ubiquitous in cities and regions. The quest for continuous renewal and improvement is a driver towards a thriving development as well as land use impact, displacement and “constructive destruction” with all their side effects.

Urban development is not a one-way street leading towards an ideal end. Changes of the framework – like revival or crisis of economic sectors, the change of social ideals or ecologically driven challenges – demand the adaptation of the system of aims and development strategies. Also changes of the infrastructure and targeted interventions of planning (lighthouse projects, major events, etc.) lead towards elementary changes of the dynamics and trends of development.

Permanent change takes place – often as continuous, evolutionary development, but sometimes also with huge, dramatic turning points. The matter of “change as requirement for stability of cities and regions” is the core topic of REAL CORP 2011.

How can planning deal with “lifecycles of cities and regions”? Special attention will be paid to the technical possibilities of confronting and forming the changes: planning processes and instruments as well as urban, environmental, transport, communication and GIS technologies.

Some of the topics for which we invite you to submit your interesting contributions are:

• quality of life as benchmark of successful urban development,

• influence of “new technologies” on urban development,

• spatial aspects of innovation and transfer of knowledge and technology,

• management of rapid growth, structural change and shrinkage,

• sustainability through intelligent resource management,

• stability, safety and vulnerability of modern cities,

• anticipatory planning under economically challenging circumstances,
