International Economic Development Council Internship Opportunity
"The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) is currently accepting applications for the Spring 2013 Intern Program. Internships are offered to graduate and undergraduate students in economic development, city and regional planning, public administration, and public policy programs. The internship will be located at our Washington, DC office; graduate-level internships are paid positions, but undergraduates are unpaid. The deadline for submitting applications is November 15.
Working on varied research-related projects, interns will:
· Gain practical work experience
· Become familiar with a wide range of economic development programs and issues
· Have an opportunity to have work published
· Contribute to technical assistance projects for communities throughout the U.S.
· Prepare reports, case studies, and presentations on economic development issues and trends

"The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) is currently accepting applications for a Fall 2012 internship position to work on updating content for our professional development courses. Topics range from economic development to marketing to managing economic development organizations. This position is open until filled.
Qualifications: The intern should be pursuing a degree or already hold a degree in urban planning, economic development, public administration, business, or an allied field. Previous work experience in an economic development organization is preferred, although not required. The intern will work an average of 20 hours per week from September to the end of December in our Washington, DC office. Applicants should also have:

Environmental Interpretation Internship/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Patuxent Research Refuge
September 15, 2012 - June 15th, 2013, 2012 (dates are negotiable)
Qualifications:
Must have well-developed communication skills and leadership ability; be able to work independently and as part of a team; experience working with children and adults preferred. A Bachelor's degree (or pursuing) in education, natural resources, or related field is desired. A valid driver's license necessary.
Duties:
Individual will primarily work off-refuge at a large public school system, and will provide quality environmental educational experiences for students, technical expertise to teachers and faculty, and promote the National Wildlife Refuge System's role in creating environmental awareness among urban populations. Employee will work with public school system and its partners to deliver value added environmental education programs; assist senior FWS and public school staff with development of internal and external partnerships; and assist with development/promotion of opportunities for service learning projects, such as recycling, schoolyard habitats, citizen science, etc. Individual will work primarily in Fairfax County, but may have to report periodically to Patuxent Research Refuge for specific assignments, training opportunities, etc. Day to day supervision will be by Fairfax County Public School System staff

Organization Description
Founded in 1971, the Washington Youth Garden at the U.S. National Arboretum provides a unique year-round environmental science and food education program for youth and families via four core environmental science and food education programs Garden Science, Seed To Supper, Growing Food…Growing Together and SPROUT and a one acre teaching and demonstration garden at the U.S. National Arboretum.
Through garden exploration, the mission of the Washington Youth Garden is to inspire and engage youth and families in self-discovery, explore relationships with food and the natural world, and contribute to the health of the environment and their communities.
Responsibilities:
Seeking an energetic, creative individual with strong communication and social media skills to assist small staff with managing and advancing the organization’s communication systems. The Communications/Media Intern will have the opportunity to work on a variety of communication projects involving website and blog maintenance, newsletter development and writing, coordinating presence on social media networks, communications database development and maintenance, writing articles and organizational communications, as well as assisting with programs and special events. Intern would report to WYG’s Program Director.
Primary responsibilities will include:
• Managing website, blog and other social networking sites (i.e., Facebook, Flickr);
• Assist with ongoing development, design, editing and dissemination of WYG’s e-newsletter;
• Assist with development and maintenance of communications database;
• Cultivate WYG’s electronic and print media contact database (and place stories in print, blogs and other online sites where applicable);
• Assist with creation and maintenance of garden signage;
• Photographic documentation of programming and special events; and
• Occasional program and special events support.
Qualifications:
At minimum 1-2 years of media/communications operation experience.
• Excellent written communications skills; excellent interpersonal skills;
• Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.); experience or willingness to learn Non-Profit Soapbox, and Emma Email Marketing Service;
• Experience with social networking sites such as Facebook, Flickr;
• Creative self-starter; proven ability to work independently and as a team player; manage details and complete assignments in an efficient and effective manner;
• Enthusiasm for sustainable food movement; interest in nonprofit communications, and marketing;
• Arts/creative experiences, photography and bilingual skills are highly recommended.
Time commitment:
Part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) three month position beginning early February through April 2012. The start and end dates and hourly commitment of the internship are flexible and can be adjusted in response to both organization’s and intern’s needs.
Compensation:
The internship is unpaid, but WYG can arrange for the intern to earn academic credit through one’s college or university if applicable.

The White House internship program is now accepting applications for summer 2012 positions!
This program provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. Although unpaid, this hands-on program is designed to mentor and cultivate today's young leaders, strengthen their understanding of the Executive Office, and prepare them for future public service opportunities.
The application period for the summer 2012 White House internship program is now open until January 22, 2012.
All White House interns are expected to intern full-time for the entire term of the program.

Brookings Metro Internship Announcement
Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program Spring 2012 Internship
General Information
The Metropolitan Policy Program offers spring semester internships for qualified candidates. Interns will work closely with staff providing research and administrative support for Metro’s current projects and day to day office functioning. Semester interns typically devote at least 20 hours per week to the Metro Program, but alternative schedules will also be considered.
Undergraduate students (especially upperclassmen), graduate students, and recent college graduates majoring in public policy, urban policy, statistics, economics, other liberal arts, or related fields are encouraged to apply for our research internships.
Our most successful applicants balance high level quantitative research proficiency with strong writing skills, demonstrated through previous research experience. Experience with Excel, ArcGIS, SAS, STATA and/or Access is strongly recommended, but not required.
Metro also offers a communications internship for an individual interested in communications, public relations, or journalism and how these fields relate to Metro’s operations. Duties include: pitching stories about Metro Program reports to regional and national media; assisting in coordinating and staffing outreach events such as press conferences, forums, and policy roundtables; updating press lists; compiling clip reports; and other miscellaneous office duties.
Please note that all positions are unpaid. Spring semester internships generally run from January or February through early May, however, some flexibility exists.
