Economic Development Internship

Interested in a career in economic development, urban and regional planning, community development, public policy or local government? Want to learn more about the subject of how communities recover economically? Looking for more hands-on research experience? Want to network with experts in economic development and related industries as well as gain an insiders view on career opportunities in economic development? Then consider an internship with the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). Internship positions for the Fall 2011 semester are currently available.

IEDC is currently seeking a qualified undergraduate or graduate student to perform the following tasks:

·       Conduct & compile research on latest trends in economic development and economic recovery. This often involves a heavy amount of verbal phone interviews with practitioners and research institutions, in addition to internet and journal-based research.

·       Assist with the case study development on various economic recovery subjects

·       Perform best practice research for the development and growth of a new economic development organizations

·       Assist in the preparation of forums on various economic development subjects/topics

·       Help with site visit preparation and background research for several economic development assessments for communities

Interns at IEDC play an integral role in our organization and are treated as such, with content-based activities significantly outweighing administrative tasks. As such, interns are expected to be self starters and have comfort with taking ownership to see tasks and projects through to completion.

This internship is geared for students who wish to learn new subjects, expand current knowledge, and gain valuable work experience, particularly in the area of economic development and post-disaster economic recovery. Graduate intern positions are paid. While undergraduate internships are unpaid, interns have the opportunity to attend local IEDC conferences, brown bag lunches and professional development webinars.

Applicants should be available to commit to a regular schedule of 2 to 3 days per week, preferably during regular working hours, however we are flexible to accommodate class schedules. Students must be willing to work at least 16 hours per week.

To apply, please send a copy of your resume, a cover letter, two writing samples, and your availability to Carrie Mulcaire, intern@iedconline.org.  Undergraduate intern positions are unpaid while graduate student internships are paid at $13 per hour.
