Supervisor’s Title: Principal Planner
Nature of Position: The GIS Planner will support local governments in a twelve county region through mapping and planning projects. The successful candidate will serve as the Division’s lead for the following: creating and maintaining geodatabases, analyzing spatial data, crafting user-friendly maps, updating parcel and boundary information, preparing metadata, formatting GIS datasets to meet Department of Community Affairs’ standards, providing technical assistance to local governments and performing fieldwork as needed. The position also requires collaboration with a staff GIS Technician.
In a planning capacity, essential functions include making public presentations, researching and analyzing demographic data, facilitating meetings and responding to local governments as needed. Support work will also be performed on the following types of plans: comprehensive, disaster mitigation, urban redevelopment, housing, transportation and special-project plans. Other tasks and plan management duties may be assigned to the position based upon the qualifications of the applicant.
Education: Candidates must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in geography, planning or a related field. Preference will be given to those with a master’s degree in geography, planning or a related field. AICP certification is desirable.
Required Skills: Excellent written and public presentation skills. Project management experience. Must be able to multi-task. Ability to establish and maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work at all levels, with a focus on quality service to internal and external clients. Familiarity with Georgia’s minimum planning standards and the Department of Community Affairs’ protocols is desirable.
Computer Skills: ArcGIS 10, ArcCatalog 10, network/server maintenance, GPS data collection, plotter/printer setup and maintenance, and MS Office.
Experience: This position requires at least three years of experience with ArcGIS software and at least one year of experience working in a public or private planning department.
